About the Artist

Anyone who has ever fallen in love (and who hasn’t?) knows what it is like for me to work with clay. That is not the stretch you might first believe, as many of the responses are the same.  All of a sudden you feel so open and alive, you want to spend all your time at it, you think of it most waking hours, you are totally absorbed in the moments spent doing it, you can’t really explain why. It is not a philosophical issue. It’s love.

Eventually, as with falling in love, it dissipates or deepens. You learn what resonates and you follow that, and your work evolves.  I started full time in 2002 in classes and workshops. I continue to find passion and pleasure in the work. I continue to be sparked by something I have seen, or read, or heard in ways I would not have imagined could be used for my clay work.

Besides this love of the medium, clay, I have two other constants. I love texture on my pieces, and hand building is my primary and preferred technique for creating work. For me, technique is the foundation needed in order to create through curiosity and openness.  With these elements one can produce a piece and a conversation can be created between the clay and the client. Does a certain piece “speak” to you? Success!

“We are fortunate indeed if even a portion of what moves our heart is of real interest to another human being.” Unfortunately I don’t remember who said this.
“It;s not that you’re searching for something new, it’s that something new comes.”

Susan @Artisans Connect Gallery

Susan’s hand-built pottery has been in the gallery since day 1.  I have always been drawn to handmade pottery and her textures and glazes caught my eye immediately.

Susan’s jars, boxes and shapes are unique.  Many of her textures are her own design using hand carved fire bricks as stamps to imprint the texture. Look closely at her pieces with a lid – they are wonderful tops to her pieces.

Here are a few of Susan’s pieces that are currently available* in the gallery.
